African Americans are more prone to physical illness as compared to Americans. This is why health tips for African Americans should be strictly followed. African Americans indicate those citizens of America whose forefathers came to USA as part of the slave trade and settled down here.

Here are some statistics to show how African Americans are relatively more susceptible to diseases than Americans:

  1. 70 % more African Americans suffer from diabetes as compared to Americans.

  2. African American women are 1.7 times more likely to become obese as compared to White women.

  3. Infant Mortality Rate is twice as high for African Americans than for White women.

The data clearly suggests that African American need extra health care in order to stay fit. The major diseases that affect this community are – AIDS, STDs, Coronary Heart Disease, Hypertension, Asthma, and Stroke. Although these are the few known areas that require medical attention, African Americans are prone to many more diseases due to their poor immunity and genetic make up.

Depending on this study here are a few health tips for African Americans:

  1. AIDS: African Americans should be more aware when it comes to protect oneself from STDs and AIDS. People who are sexually active should use necessary precautions and get themselves periodically tested to rule out any occurrence of this disease. Pregnant African American women must get themselves checked so that the child is not born with AIDS.

  2. Breast Cancer: Breast cancer is another disease troubling millions of women in USA. The instance of breast cancer found among African American women is greater when compared to the White population. As a precaution African American women should avoid addiction to smoking and drinking, treat obesity, and also go for regular mammogram tests for timely detection of the disease.

  3. Heart Disease: Due to obesity, African American population is more prone to heart attacks, chocked arteries, high blood pressure, and so on. According to a research African American people have more heart weight as compared to Whites. There needs to be a lot of awareness among the community to maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent these health hazards.

Apart from awareness about various diseases that African American people are more prone to, the community should also take preventive steps like eating healthy, regular exercise, being in touch with the doctor, buying a health insurance plan, come out of the habit of smoking and drinking, no addiction to drugs, and so on.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the first step to prevent diseases. You should be physically active and maintain a healthy weight and BMI. To be more aware of what all problems can affect the people of African American community you must be a part of the community’s forum.
