Buying art – paintings, sculptures or prints can be a daunting experience especially for a novice. But the truth is that anyone can purchase and collect art intelligently. You don’t require any experience or qualification to be able to buy good art. You just need to have an eye and the ability to appreciate fine art in order to buy art work.
By following the below mentioned guidelines and tips you can become a good collector of art.
- Visit Art Fairs & Exhibitions – Usually artists display their paintings in art galleries. Many galleries come together to exhibit in an art fair. Visiting such art fairs and art exhibition will help you get an idea of the various artists and their styles of work. Also you’ll be able to discover your own taste in art.
- Get Information on the Art Piece – Once you’ve made a mental list of the art pieces you’ve liked, gather information about those paintings. Information about the art work like the price of the art work, reviews of the art work, reviews of the artist and the reputation of the gallery selling the art piece are all essential to buying art.
- Study the Artist’s Biography – It’s important to also learn about the artist of the painting you’re interested in. Information like the artist’s qualification, experience, awards he’s received, collectors who own the artist’s art, galleries the artist is associated with, publications that wrote about the artists will help you gauge the potential of the artist.
Try to Interact Directly with the Artist – Interaction with the artist surely helps understanding the art piece better. You will understand the artist’s vision and perspective.
- Check if the Painting’s Worth the Price – Once you learn about the artist you will get a picture of how much the artist’s works are sold for? If the price of the painting matches with the market price of his other works, then it’s worth making the purchase. Also do a comparative study of the art works that are put up in all the galleries in your neighborhood.
- Ask if the Painting Is an Original – You’ll need to ask the curator or the gallery’s authority if the painting is an Original piece, Copy or a print of that artist. Obviously the price will vary depending if it’s an original. This information is also important to save yourself from fraud artists.
- Negotiate – It doesn’t harm if you negotiate with the artist or the dealer on the price of the art piece you’re interested in. Ask if there are any discounts. Alternatively, you can ask if they would reduce the price if you bought more than one piece.
- Ensure to Ask for the Certificate of Authenticity – A certificate of authenticity will include information like title of work, date of production, exact dimensions of the piece of art, if it’s a print – the name of the publisher, edition sizes in case of limited editions, books that list the art.
These tips will assist you in making a well informed purchase.
