“Phishing” means sending widespread email to gather personal data that will be used for identity theft. This type of e-mail looks like as if it’s been sent from a reputed company or an organization. The email directs you to a website where the user is asked to update personal information such as, credit card details, passwords, bank details, social security number etc., which the organization already has. Hence, phishing has become a matter of concern for all internet users. So while using internet we should follow few tips to avoid phishing that can save us from being a cyber crime victim.
Some Tips to Avoid Phishing:
Beware of spam mails or any other e-mail’s that is requesting for any personal information. Even if the email you receive is from the “.com address” of the company you deal with. Rather then responding to such e-mail’s it is better to call customer service number and confirm about it. Legitimate company never asks such confidential information via email.
Before you click or visit any site be careful and check the site URL properly. Check if the name of the URL is real and doesn’t redirect to another website. Cyber criminals create fake web sites which are similar to the name of your website and try to cheat you.
Try to check your online accounts or credit card information regularly. Read the statement properly as it provides us with information about the number of transactions made on the card, last log in etc. If the statement states a transaction that wasn’t made by you then contact customer service immediately and ask them to take necessary actions against it.
Keep your operating system and browser up-to-date with latest security patches. Operating systems can automatically patch up if we set it to do so. If you use internet explore you need to have an updated antivirus or firewall to protect your system.
Before operating with sites that are used for commercial purpose, always try to make sure that you are operating with the safe site. Check the address bar properly, if the website name starts with” https://” or “http://” it better to use site with “ https://”, as “s” represents that the site is secure. Always make sure to check the security lock button.
