Pencil Sketching Tips
Submitted By: david in Arts Tips category
Sketching is usually the first step to a painting or a picture. Pencils are the most commonly used mediums to make a sketch. A pencil sketch or any sketch for that matter is the building block or foundation to a good painting. In many cases, a pencil sketch is the final product that constitutes the complete impression. To be able to create a fine pencil sketch, one should be an ardent observant and be good with the pencil. In this article, we’ll discuss some important pencil sketching tips to help you with your sketch.
Get the Right Tools – Before we begin, you’ll need to get the right set of tools. You’ll need paper, pencils, drawing board, paper clips, eraser, sharpener and some tissue paper. Make sure you use good quality paper for your sketch. You’ll need sketching pencils that come in various numbers starting from HB to 6B. You’ll also need a drawing board and paper clips to mount your paper. Your pencils should always be sharp and hence you’ll require a good sharpener and also you’ll need a good eraser. Have some tissue towels with you, it may come in handy. After you’ve assembled all the tools you’re good to go.
Be Observant – When you sketch, you’re usually looking at some object or scenery which is to be sketched. Don’t rush or be in haste to begin drawing. Always study the object and its surroundings to include all details in your sketch. It’s important to be observant in order to create an excellent painting or a sketch
Make Outlines of Your Sketch – Commence, by making outlines of the objects and shapes to be drawn. Avoid going into details and shading at the initial stage. Making outlines bring proper positioning and proportions of objects to your sketch. While making outlines make use of basic shapes and structure. For example, if you’re drawing an apple, first make a circle on paper which will illustrate that it’s an apple. Also, remember to be light on your pencil while drawing the skeleton of your sketch. Hard lines are difficult to erase and make an imprint on your paper. Use the extended tripod grip to hold your pencil, this allows free movement of pencil and makes light marks on paper, making it ideal for sketching.
Concentrate on Even Shading – Once you’re done with the sketching, its time to start shading. You must maintain a uniform movement of the pencil to avoid creating bands of tone in shaded areas. The ideal way to hold the pencil is to use the overhand grip. Also while shading, follow the shape of the object rather than following the shape of your arm as you move across the page.
Your shading must be even to make your sketch look perfect.
Give Depth to Your Sketches – A sketch is of no good if it has no depth. It’s important to look at the light and dark elements while sketching. You have to shade the dark elements in dark tones and vice versa for light elements. Even distance is measured by the way we apply shades to object. An object in the foreground will appear lighter. Shadows play an important role too. One has to include in their sketch shadows, depiction of the source of light, distance etc., to give it depth.
Avoid Smudging – While you sketch and shade, the pencil marks get onto your hand. Shading with dirty hands will only create smudges on your paper. Use tissue paper to cover the paper while you shade – this will avoid smudging.
So these pencil sketching tips will help you perk up your pencil sketching abilities.
