Sketching Tips

Sketching is an easy to jot down ideas quickly on you your sketchpad or canvas to use it later. There are many mediums to make a quick sketch, mediums like pencils, charcoal, pastels, water colors and color pencils. But pencils are used most commonly. When an artist comes across an idea he/she quickly makes a record of it in his/her sketchbook lest he forgets about it later. Also, an artist may record on paper, beautiful sceneries that he came across say while traveling, that he would like to paint on canvas later on. But to be able to quickly sketch, artists need to keep some points in mind. Below are some sketching tips which will help an artist to be more prepared.

  • Carry a Sketchbook and Pencil Always – A good artist always carries his sketch pad and sketching tools with him. Remember Leonardo Di Caprio in ‘Titanic’? His sketchpad was his prized possession. One has to carry a sketchpad and pencils at all times, because you never when you’ll come across an idea or an object of interest or a beautiful landscape that you’d want to paint later on. Ensure your sketch paper is of good quality and your pencils are sharp.

  • Make a Rough Sketch and Avoid Detailing – When making a quick sketch, it’s important to avoid going into details. For example, if you’re sketching a tree or a bush, don’t go into every detail of the leaves, bark, stems etc. Details can be added later on. Just draw a rough sketch of the impression you’re sketching.

    Stick to Vital Information – It’s also important for an artist to stick to vital information while making a quick sketch. As an artist you must be able to outline only the important elements, which will make the drawing or sketch seem complete. Other trivial elements can be added later on when making the actual painting.

  • Add Color to Capture the Essence – Sometimes, when you are sketching a beautiful landscape you may want to think of adding color to the sketch. Because if you don’t add color you may not be able to capture the real essence of the beautiful scenery. You can use mediums like soft pastels, color pencils or water colors to capture the beautiful shades of color that stand in front of you. This will surely help you when you create the actual painting on canvas.

  • Take a Photograph – Taking a photograph of the place will also help you later on. Many artists nowadays make use of photographs as the primary or secondary source of their paintings. It’s a good idea to take a photograph of the desired landscape in addition to your sketch, as this will give you additional support while you paint on canvas.

  • Keep Practicing – Practice makes a man perfect. That is true in the case of an artist. The more you practice the more you’ll learn and experience. It will definitely hone your skills and make you sharp. Over a period of time, you’ll see that you can sketch better and quickly and also be able to conceptualize your sketches in a better way.
