Many of us have never understood the importance of a budget. We think it’s a waste of time but this is not true. If we make a good yearly or monthly budget, half of our financial planning is done. A budget helps us to understand our needful expenditures and how much can we save every month.

Although every family and person will have a different budget, the basic framework remains the same.

Here are a few tips to good budget:

  • To start with sit with a paper and pen and note all the possible expenses you do in a month through out the year. You might take a few days in order to prepare an exhaustive list and try to note down all the major and minor expenses. This task is worth it because this is the foundation of a sensible budget.

  • The next important thing that the budget should include is your income. An income and expense statement

  • To make it easy for calculation purposes it is a good idea to club the expenses under various heads. If you spend time over creating logical heads then you can keep putting the expenses under these heads in future.

  • It is a good idea to take the help of your family while making the budget. Both the spouses together as well as the grown up children should participate in making the budget. so that everyone’s need is noticed.

  • The budget should have fixed as well as variable expenses listed. Fixed expenses are those which are expected like credit card and phone bills, food, grocery, school fee, house rent, any loan that your are repaying, and so on. These expenses are more or less fixed and should find the first place in your budget. By listing variable expenses you keep scope for unforeseen expenses. For example a vacation that you are thinking to take, an important celebration in your family, a gift that you need to buy for someone, health care, and so on.

  • A complete budget includes not only cash expenses but also your credit expenses. Many times we do not keep account of our credit expenses and thus our budget goes for a toss.

  • Expenses should also include that you incur annually or on a monthly basis – like insurance premium, investment in mutual funds, stocks, and shares,

  • If your finances are quite spread over, then you can take the help of budgeting software. Many budgeting software’s are available in the market that provide the basic framework for a comprehensive budget. It is a spreadsheet that includes various heads. You need to put your expenses under these heads and the rest of the calculation is done by the software itself.

Making budget is no rocket science. By following these budgeting tips one can easily accomplish the task.
