 International travel is an exciting adventure but also poses many unpredictable situations. International travel tips will assist and help you remain safe in an unfamiliar and foreign territory.
When you are in a foreign country, the most serious risk is of falling ill or injury. The medical system is different and you are surrounded with totally different cultures and rules. When travelling abroad always make sure that you are covered with a good medical insurance policy.
Listed below are tips for international travel, which would make your trip a lot easier and safer:
- Safety begins as you start packing: Avoid wearing clothes or accessories that will make you noticeable and an unnecessary target. Don’t wear expensive jewellery. As far as possible avoid the appearance of affluence.
- Travel light: When you have less luggage to carry, you can move about more quickly. You will also be less exhausted and less likely to leave your luggage unattended. Carry your needed essentials, like your spectacles, medicines etc., in your carry-on luggage. It’s better to carry an extra pair of spectacles, if you wear them and can’t do without them. Avoid carrying valuables with you and if you do, hide them.
- Secure documents: Keep all important documents and currency such as your passport, cash and credit cards in a secure place. Don’t keep all your documents in one place, but try keeping it in various locations, lest it gets stolen. Carrying traveller’s cheques and major credit cards are better options than cash.
- Medicines: To avoid problems when passing through customs, keep medicines in their original, labelled containers. Bring copies of your prescriptions and the generic names for the drugs, as some drugs maybe banned in some countries.
- Luggage safety: Put your name, address and telephone numbers inside and outside of each piece of luggage. Don’t display your identity and nationality prominently on your luggage, instead, use covered name tags. Lock your luggage and don’t leave it unattended.
- Get a telephone calling card: Calling cards help you stay connected at all times. Ensure that you verify the cards for usage abroad.

- Unnecessary credit cards
- Valuable jewellery
- Social Security card, library cards, and similar items that you routinely carry in your wallet.
- Ensure that you leave a copy of your itinerary with your family or friends at home in case they need to contact you in an emergency.
Remember:
- Before your travel abroad, make sure that your travel itinerary is in place. For a safe stay, book your stay in larger hotels where security is assured and is a priority.
- Be aware of your credit card limit that you carry along while travelling. Stay in your budget and make certain not to charge over that amount on your trip.
- Check if your health insurance covers you while you’re abroad. Ensure that you’re insured. You could also opt for different international medical insurance plans for your short-term or long-term travel plans.
