Tips on creating landscape paintingsLandscape paintings are a means to capture your surroundings and recreate it on canvas. A landscape painting is a portrayal of nature – mountains, trees, valleys, flowers, sea, buildings etc. Landscape paintings are the most popular kind of paintings among artists and art lovers, because unlike abstract paintings, landscape paintings are simply beautiful and are void of any absurd symbols that leaves a viewer guessing what it means. Good paintings always have the viewers in awe of a marvelous piece of art. So how does one create a good landscape painting? Here are some tips on creating landscape paintings.

  • Create an Impression – Many a times an artist gets overwhelmed by his surroundings and has the urge to imbibe all the details in his painting. The point is that, there is no need to include every detail in your painting. You need to remember that you are supposed to create only an impression of the landscape rather than the landscape itself.

  • Create Your Own Composition – You don’t have to paint the landscape exactly as it is. Give way to creativity. Remember that painting a landscape isn’t a photographic representation of the landscape. You can feel free to remove some items such as bushes, trees etc., or could add items like a man walking or a bird on a tree in order to make an appealing composition.

  • Always Include a Focal Point – A focal point is an object or area of emphasis in your painting around which the entire painting is created. It is often called the center of interest and this is what drags the viewer’s attention to the painting. A focal point doesn’t need to be positioned at the center of your landscape painting.

  • Painting on Location – Most landscape paintings is inspired from nature and the best way to capture the essence of nature is to paint on location. But when you paint on location, try to restrict yourself from carrying all your art supplies, or else you may end up spending all your energies in carrying your supplies rather than painting. Also you’ll need to keep in mind that the light will vary as you paint, so take a photograph of the location. You can refer to the photograph later on.

  • Give Dimension to Your Painting – It’s important to add dimension to your picture to make it visually appealing. There must be a foreground and a background. You can add all details to the objects in the foreground and fewer details in the background, which will give the painting depth and a sense of distance. Adding dimension and depth to your painting will not make it look flat.

  • Mix Colors – At first glance, the colors of a landscape may appear to be a compilation of blues, greens and browns. But if you look carefully, there is more to just blue, green and brown. Also you will find different shades of the same color. Hence, each color should be applied in various shades and tones of the same color, to give it dimension and depth. Mixing colors is a very important aspect of painting.

For an artist, landscape painting is a pleasurable experience. The possibilities are endless like nature itself. Following these tips on creating landscape paintings will definitely help you with creating a master piece!!
