Diesel Engine Maintenance
Submitted By: larry in Auto Tips category
Diesel engine car is a perfect choice if you are looking for a car with a steady torque and pulling power without having to sacrifice with fuel economy. As the cost of fuel is rising with no end in sight, diesel engine is a good alternative to gasoline engines.Diesel engine is very massive and heavy to offset the stress of high compression, which makes this engine a bit expensive and needs proper maintenance than that of gasoline engines. So for better prominence of diesel engine we need to follow some diesel engine maintenance tips.
Important Diesel Engine Maintenance Tips:
- Gaskets of diesel engine must be monitored closely since they are exposed to extreme operating conditions. It is better if all mounting bolts are re-tortured at regular interval to prevent leaks especially in the combustion mounting areas. This is the same for coolant hoses which can deteriorate quickly if not secured properly. It is better to replace a leaky gasket as a set. Once it starts to leak, the rest is not far behind.
- Diesel engine uses lots of air. It is very important to have proper attention towards engine air filter performance. It is better to install a tell tale plastic indicator on the side of the air filter housing. As soon as the engine filter element becomes dirty the indicators changes the color, and thereby, it is very important to replace those air filters as soon as it is possible. Cooling this air is also critical especially if the engine is turbo charged. Nowadays diesel engines are fitted with after coolers to cool the air from turbo charger.
- It is very important to check the oil filter in diesel engines. Diesel engine may contain bad element of sulfur residue and carbon created when fuel is not burnt completely. Try to install good quality oil filter which meet or exceed the OEM filter recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. By doing so you can ensure that all corrosive particles are removed from oil.
- Engine cooling system is critical in diesel engines. If engine is overheated and not caught at early stage, the engine can get damaged. So it is very important to place an early warming system at your dash panel. As early warming system indicates about overheating of engine, this can protect your engine by getting damaged due to overheating. Now days most cars have this feature in their dash and must be checked regularly to ensure that early warming system is working well.
- During winters, normally it is hard to start a diesel engine. To overcome such situation you need to install an electrical heater to the cylinder block. Or you can also install a heater element in series with the heater hose. During extreme winters when it gets very difficult to start, you can spray a starting fluid in the combustion chamber but use it carefully to prevent scaring the cylinder walls.
So these are some of the diesel engine maintenance tips which we need to follow to ensure better performance of diesel engine cars.
