Tips on how to draw peopleDrawing is a hobby for many people. It has always been seen that drawing people is a rather tough task in comparison to any other drawing. Learning how to draw people takes a lot of practice and is considered the ultimate challenge by most artists. Before you begin drawing people, it is advisable to learn to draw simple objects first. Once you learn the nuances of drawing, you can move ahead and attempt to draw people. Here are some tips on how to draw people.

Tips on How to Draw People

  • Understand the Human Skeleton: The first step to learn how to draw humans is to break the human figure to its most simple element which is the skeleton. Although the human body has many bones, it’s most important to study the skull. The skull’s measurement can be used to draw out the proportions of other body parts.

  • Study Joints and its Range of Motions: Once you’ve understood body proportions, it’s important to understand the range of movements that each bone is capable of. This is important because you will need to be able to draw people in various positions and know till what limits each limb can extend to, before making the figure look awkward

  • Understand Muscles: This is the most vital part of learning to draw the human figure. It may take several years to master the art of drawing muscles. Muscles expand and contract depending on the position of the skeleton. The skin takes shape of the muscles. So it’s important to study and understand the human muscle body as well. Studying muscles and body motions go hand in hand.

  • Facial Expressions: Facial expressions are also important while drawing people. Eyes, eyebrows, and the mouth are the main areas which need to be focused on, as these areas are mainly important in bringing out an emotion or feeling.

  • Drawing Eyes: One common mistake that often people make while drawing eyes is that both the upper edge and the lower edge of the eye meet at a point. Actually, the edges don’t meet at a point. The upper edge of the eye protrudes farther than the lower edge. The pupil of the eye should be shaded dark, surrounded by a slightly less dark circle shade of the iris. You should also put a light bright point in the eye. This gives a lively feeling to the portrait. The edge at the side of the nose should be slightly round in comparison to the other end.

  • Clothes: Drawing clothes is also a major part while drawing people. You will have to understand how different fabrics crease and fall on the human body. This is vital in creating a good drawing.

  • Drawing Upside: If you are copying a portrait and you feel it difficult to draw a particular curve, you can invert the original photo and the drawing sheet both and draw it upside down. Drawing upside down makes you see the picture abstractly and draw the curves more accurately

One you’ve studied and understood the above mentioned points, you can begin drawing on paper. Before you begin drawing, look at the subject in front of you and study it for a while. Then break down each body part and draw them in simple lines first. For example – for the face, draw a circle first and roughly draw lines across the face, indicating the position of the eyes, nose and mouth. Later on add details to make the whole face look real and good. Similarly, you can draw the body and limbs

These are some basic tips on how to draw people. Following these tips on drawing people will help you create good drawings of people
