Check out the people living in the neighborhood. Being a social being, most of us would like to go and have a walk in the neighborhood when feeling free and relaxed, or go to a grocery store nearby. A good street lighting is considered better for safety in the street.
- The building should have a good security system. Check if the security system is a leased one or is owned by the association. It would rather be better to know the cost of the security system. Inquire about the fact that if all the doors and entrances are specially monitored by the CCTV camera. Get knowledge about the security alarm and what you can do in case of any emergency.
- When you go to take a look on the house you are going to buy, take a closer view of the things and check if the doors lock properly and are they strong enough. A screen door with automatic security system is better than normal doors with a latch. For external doors, take care that they have strong bolts and they are fitted in such a way that they cannot be unscrewed from outside.
- Second floor bedrooms are better and safer than the ground floor. However, it has some demerits too. If someone breaks in the house, the sound may not reach the second floor and you may not become aware of the fact. It is also difficult to escape from the second floor in comparison to the ground floor.
- Criminals don’t want to be noticed on the stairs or use the elevators. Therefore, they may not go to the upper floors. Most of the time second floor is targeted by them. The flats which are at the backside of the building are more likely to get attacked by the criminals compared to those which face the street.
- Inspect the windows in the rooms. If the windows have glass panes, take care that they have grills to prevent any unauthorized entry after breaking the glass. If you have a glass door near to the window, see that the door knob is located far from the window, such that it cannot be reached from the window.
- Alleys are generally dark at night and provide ways for criminals to approach your home. It also provides easy escape for the criminals. Therefore, avoid such constructions.
- Visit a local website where you can report a complaint. You can also get a list of criminals or sexual predators that live in your area. It will give you an idea about safety that you need to take while living there.
