Submitted By: Jeff Clark in Home Tips category

Exterior painting of your house increases the look of your house to a great level. A fresh coat of paint can change the look of your house from shabby appearance to an eye catcher look. You need to consider many factors before you decide to paint the exterior walls of your house. Below are discussed some do' s and don' ts of painting exterior.

Do' s and Don' ts of Painting Exterior

Do' s

If you are not experienced in painting, do not do it on your own. It would be better to hire a professional for the task. A professional who has all the skills required for painting the exteriors of your house would be best suited for the job. Painting the exteriors of your house is a complicated task and it would not be easy for a normal person to do that. Moreover, it demands a lot of ladder climbing and hard work that you would not feel comfortable with. It requires proper experience and knowledge.

Choosing the right paint is another thing that you need to consider. Latex would be a good choice for exterior walls as it protects the walls from UV rays of the sun. It is UV resistant and doesn' t fade as much as other alkyd paints. Peeling and cracking of paints also don’t occur with latex paints. Water based latex paints dry faster in comparison to oil based alkyd paints. Cleaning this paint is also easy as it just needs water and soap, whereas alkyd paints require solvents to clean. Checking the weather before you decide to paint your exteriors is necessary. Avoid painting during rainy, humid, or windy days. This may bring you in full loss.

Use of right tools is necessary while painting. When approaching a contractor for painting, make sure that they have all the required tools for the work. Painting the wall with latex paints may require high quality synthetic brush. If you are using a roller to paint the walls, it is necessary that you buy the correct width of the roller that fits the width and dimensions of the wall, so that it is easier to paint it. Moreover, you also need to have the brush of the proper material that suits the wall surface. Do not use a paint sprayer unless you are experienced in it, otherwise it may be very messy for you if you don’t know exactly how to handle it. Always use an eye protector and a hat while painting the walls to keep you safe. Prefer a secure ladder while painting the exteriors.

Don' ts

A professional contractor will ensure that they do all preparation work diligently. It is necessary that you cover the bushes, decks, and flowerbeds with drop clothes before you start painting, as the paint may fall on them. If you are putting a new coat of paint on the wall, it would be better to scrap off and sand all the old paint on the wall. This will make the surface adhere the paint tightly. Clean the surface with water, so that it is dust free and it does not affect the shine and color of the paint. Always rely upon high quality paints. Cheap paints may result in cracks later on. Your house exteriors are more prone to environmental damages. So it is important to use weather resistant paints. Try to use colors that blend with the colors of the buildings in your neighborhood. You can go for a similar, but not exactly the same shade of color.

Above were discussed the do' s and don' ts of painting exterior. Hope these tips help you have a better and long lasting painting.
